Discover the Nexus of Luxury and your Eco-Conscious Lifestyle in this Home by Free Range Building Company

Free range artistry merged with environmental sensitivity yields this stunning, energy-efficient home built by Dirk Nelson of Free Range Building Company. Built into the earth with a hybrid design of reclaimed timbers, steel, and concrete, this home embodies a one-of-a-kind meeting of beauty, luxury, simplicity, and responsibility.  Free Range means we’re not confined by a set of predetermined rules. It means we like to ask questions, like why are we caught up in a culture of throwing things away? Construction materials are just physical shapes with structural integrity, so why not put them back together, just in a new form?

Recycled Beauty

The house at 1250 Reser Road doubles as a historical collage of the inland northwest, constructed from reclaimed materials as diverse as railroad bridge trestles, crane rails, massive wooden beams from an old mill, steel light posts from the original McNary dam, and timbers from barns and homesteads across the region. Salvaged metal pieces were sandblasted, wire-wheeled, heated, and waxed to their current shine, and timbers were sanded and oiled back to life with multiple coats of linseed and tung oil. Counter tops were made from nearby columnar basalt flows, and the cabinetry was hand-crafted from wind-fallen locust trees.
The open floor plan of the house connects the living room, kitchen, and dining room into a spacious main living area. Neutral-pigmented plaster and reclaimed homestead-era wooden paneling cast a warm and earthy glow throughout.  Visit our web site at <

Living Green

Environmental responsibility encompasses more than building materials, it also demands energy efficiency. Earth-bermed, 10” thick walls and a green roof buffer the outside temperature, and the home is heated and cooled by a geothermal ground loop tempering a polished radiant concrete slab. Completely electric, the home is built ready to accept a grid-tied solar array, and twenty motorized windows work in conjunction with an array of paddle fans to provide natural air circulation. An upper clerestory facilitates the air flow and allows daylight to shine into all rooms of the house, even in winter.

Situated on a 1-acre lot, the home is nestled amidst earthen berms, basalt boulders, and majestic Ponderosa and Walnut trees.  Russell Creek meanders along the southern border, and the landscaping integrates low-maintenance native bunchgrasses and drought-tolerant plants with select areas of traditional lawn.  A ground level back patio and an above-ground deck provide ample outdoor living space.
